Shumi, the Urban Alchemist mushroom character, thinking: the Clarity shelf of Lion's Mane and nootropics
Shelf 01

Clarity

For the morning that hasn't started yet.

  • Lion's Mane
  • Functional mushroom coffee
  • Nootropic blends
  • B12
  • Green & matcha tea
  • L-theanine

Lion's Mane has been eaten as food in Chinese and Japanese kitchens for centuries and is traditionally used for focus. Most people take it in the morning cup, not as a pill.

If you sat down at nine and it's now eleven and you've done nothing, start here.

Shumi standing ready: the Stamina shelf of Cordyceps, electrolytes and yerba mate
Shelf 02

Stamina

For the day that needs a second half.

  • Cordyceps
  • Electrolytes
  • Functional honey
  • Energy blends
  • Yerba mat茅
  • Guayusa

The three o'clock dip is not a character flaw. Cordyceps has been used for centuries in Tibet and Nepal and is traditionally taken for endurance.

Better than a fourth espresso. Ask me why.

Shumi meditating: the Calm shelf of Reishi, loose-leaf tea and magnesium
Shelf 03

Calm

For the six o'clock reset.

  • Reishi
  • Loose-leaf teas
  • Chamomile & botanicals
  • Candles
  • Magnesium
  • Ashwagandha

This shelf is about ending the day on purpose. Reishi is bitter and earthy, almost always taken as an evening tea, and appears in Chinese herbal texts going back two thousand years.

Overheads off. One lamp. Something warm you have to wait for.

Shumi yawning: the Seasonal shelf of Chaga, elderberry and warming teas for a Chicago winter
Shelf 04

Seasonal

For the months this city is famous for.

  • Chaga
  • Elderberry
  • Warming teas
  • Raw honey
  • Ginger & turmeric

Chaga grows on birch in cold places and tastes closer to coffee than tea. Brewed as a daily winter drink across Siberia for generations, which in a Chicago February feels about right.

It's going to be thirty-five degrees and dark at half four. Be ready.

Shumi giving a thumbs up: the Ritual shelf of locally made glass, grinders, jars and trays
Shelf 05

Ritual

For the objects you keep, not the ones you use up.

  • Locally made glass
  • Grinders
  • Storage jars
  • Trays
  • Torches
  • Rolling papers

The things that don't run out. Locally made glass where we can get it, storage that actually seals, and objects that make an evening feel deliberate.

Buy the nice one once. You'll still have it in five years.

Shumi looking surprised: the Curious shelf of rare imported snacks from Japan, Korea and Mexico
Shelf 06

Curious

For the shelf that surprises you.

  • 馃嚡馃嚨Japan
  • 馃嚢馃嚪Korea
  • 馃嚥馃嚱Mexico
  • 馃嚬馃嚟Thailand
  • 馃嚠馃嚦India
  • 馃嚨馃嚟Philippines
  • and more

Sorted by where things came from. We are fully aware this isn't the wellness part. It is just true, and it is why a lot of people come back.

Nobody has ever regretted the weird snack.

Smell first, decide second

Open the jar
before you choose.

A wall of big glass jars along the counter. Teas, dried culinary mushrooms, herbs, botanicals. Lids off, so you can smell what you are considering.

There's no wrong answer at the jar wall. There's just the one that smells like your Saturday.

The Snack Passport

Countries currently on the snack shelf: Japan, Korea, Mexico, Thailand, India, the Philippines, the United Kingdom, Germany, Brazil and Nigeria.

Straight answers

Ask the
Alchemist.

The questions people actually ask at the counter.

Where exactly are you, and what's nearby?

2219 N Clybourn Ave, Unit A, Chicago, IL 60614, in Lincoln Park. We're two doors up from the Pequod's Pizza line at 2207, about half a mile from the DePaul University campus, and a short walk from Webster Place.

Walkable from Lincoln Park and Bucktown, a short ride from the Loop, and there's street parking on Clybourn. If you're waiting on a deep-dish table, you have time.

What do you actually sell?

Functional mushrooms (Lion's Mane, Cordyceps, Reishi, Chaga), nootropic blends, loose-leaf teas, herbs and botanicals, magnesium and electrolytes, candles, locally made glass, grinders, storage jars and trays, and rare imported snacks from Japan, Korea, Mexico, Thailand, India and the Philippines.

The shelves are sorted by how you want to feel, not by product name, so you don't need to know what anything is called before you walk in.

Where can I buy Lion's Mane, Reishi, Cordyceps or Chaga in Lincoln Park?

Here, at 2219 N Clybourn Ave. We keep all four on the shelf: Lion's Mane as coffee and morning blends, Cordyceps for the afternoon, Reishi as an evening tea, and Chaga through the Chicago winter. Alongside them: nootropic blends, B12, matcha and green tea, yerba mate, electrolytes, functional honey, magnesium, chamomile and loose-leaf botanicals.

These are culinary and traditional mushrooms, the kind that go in a drink. Nothing on that shelf is psychedelic.

Do you have Japanese, Korean or Mexican snacks?

Yes. The snack wall is sorted by country: Japan, Korea, Mexico, Thailand, India, the Philippines, the United Kingdom, Germany, Brazil and Nigeria, and it changes as things come in.

It is the reason a lot of people first walk through the door, and it is a two-minute detour if you are already on Clybourn waiting for a table.

Is there parking? What's the closest stop?

There is street parking on Clybourn, and the Webster Place lot is a short walk. The 74 Fullerton and 73 Armitage buses both put you within a few blocks, and the Fullerton stop on the Red, Brown and Purple lines is walkable from the DePaul side.

Coming from Bucktown or Wrightwood, it is a straight shot down Clybourn.

What are your hours?

Open seven days a week, 10am to 10pm. Call (312) 375-4448 if you're making a late trip.

I've never been in a shop like this. Where do I start?

With a feeling, not a product. Say "I want to focus," or "I want to wind down," or "no idea, show me something." We hear all three every day.

You don't need to know a brand or an ingredient name. That's our job.

Is this the real thing, or is it fake?

Everything we carry is third-party lab tested, and every batch has a certificate of analysis with a scannable code on the package.

Ask and we'll pull it up at the counter while you stand there. That isn't a favor, it's the minimum.

What is a certificate of analysis?

A report from an independent laboratory, not the brand and not us, showing what a batch actually contains and that it was screened for contaminants.

Bring us any label, from anywhere, and we'll read it with you.

Are the mushrooms psychedelic?

No. Everything on our mushroom shelf is a functional or culinary mushroom: Lion's Mane, Cordyceps, Reishi and Chaga. Same category of thing as a shiitake. Food and traditional herbal ingredients, sold as dietary supplements.

We do not sell psilocybin or anything psychedelic, and we never will. Psilocybin is a controlled substance in Illinois.

Can you tell me what to take for my condition?

No, and we'd be suspicious of any shop that said yes. We're a retail store, not a clinic, and nothing we sell is intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

What we can do is tell you what something is, where it came from, how it has been used traditionally, and when we think you'd be wasting your money. For anything medical, talk to your doctor, especially if you're pregnant or nursing, have a diagnosed condition, or take prescription medication.

Are you a dispensary?

No. Urban Alchemist is not a licensed cannabis dispensary and we don't sell cannabis as defined by Illinois law. We're a wellness boutique carrying functional mushrooms, nootropics, teas, botanicals, glass and snacks. We say it plainly because the difference matters.

Do I have to buy something?

No. People stand at the jar wall for twenty minutes and leave with nothing. That's a good visit. Come in out of the cold and ask a question.

How old do I have to be, and will you check?

21 and over. We check ID for anyone who appears under 30, every single time, with no exceptions. That includes busy nights, and it includes regulars.

There's a university half a mile away. We don't bend on this one.
